In this arc, the Hulk and Bruce Banner become embroiled in a two‑fold crisis—first through his new affiliation with the ancient hero group the Pantheon (who enlist him following a U‑Foes attack) and then through the sinister machinations of his arch‑foe the Leader, who seeks to exploit Banner’s friend Rick Jones and Rick’s girlfriend Marlo Chandler by promising Marlo resurrection via his “Deus Ex Machina” device at his Freehold stronghold; as Rick is drawn into the Leader’s scheme, Marlo is murdered by a deranged woman posing as Rick’s mother, the Hulk storms Freehold and battles both the Leader and HYDRA, and in the explosive finale Banner must face both his emotional trauma and the monstrous agenda of the Leader to prevent further catastrophe and loss.
